Congratulations to the Elm team following their mammoth achievement in the Deloitte Ride Across Britain challenge. Daren Spencer, Dave Madsen and former Bath player Ben Cundy battled the elements over the weekend, climbing over 16,000 feet in strong winds and torrential rain. The ride in aid of the Bath Rugby Foundation – which enhances the lives of young people through sport, focusing on those with social and other disadvantages, raised over £94,000, with the Elm team raising £4,500.

Approximately 1,000 riders took part in the challenge that started in John O’Groats, with the Elm Workspace team joining the ride in Wincanton early Saturday morning, ahead of a 226 mile ride to Land’s End. Bath Rugby legend Lewis Moody described it as his toughest ever challenge in a motivational speech to the riders on Saturday. The former England player joined by several ex-Bath legends and Olympic silver medalist Heather Fell completed the 982 miles. The Bath Rugby Foundation celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and the hard-earned funds raised from the challenge will go a long way in improving the lives of young people through sport. The charity helped 22,500 young people last year enhance their lives.

Elm MD Daren commented, “I’m bruised and battered, it was the toughest couple of days I’ve ever experienced. The weather conditions were incredible but the support along the way has been fantastic. I’m delighted that we have been able to raise so much for a great charity, thank you to everyone who contributed and supported us on the ride.”

You can still make a donation to the Bath Rugby Foundation, through Daren’s web page.

Elm Workspace has recently completed the office refurbishment and office furniture fit-out for a major international pharmaceutical client, incorporating a bespoke table.

This is the third floor that Elm have completed for their client, in a short time frame, which saw a working environment created for 82 employees. The floor also contains 6 meeting areas, which includes; sliding wall, phone booths, reprographics area, digiwall, power and data.

The key feature to the room is the bespoke group-briefing island. This uniquely designed piece of office furniture is the centre of the office space. The challenge for Elm Workspace was to design, build and install the standing height table, that would be a functional design feature for the office. The main purpose of the table was to create a key focal point without hindering the working environment.

The client advised Elm that a teardrop shape would be best suited to the space. Elm’s in-house design team created this option as well as using their skills and experience to create an alternative option; the client signed off the new design and the teardrop shape was dropped.

After agreeing the shape Elm’s designers created three colour option visuals using the latest 3D computer design software and presented them to the client. Following a series of meetings, concepts, visuals and final designs the table was assembled in the workshop to check sizing and final finish, before installing this unique feature onsite.

Elm’s designers have had a busy start to 2013, producing not only 3D rendered visuals and concepts but also detailed office space planning for a number of high profile private and public sector clients.

View our space-planning page to see a selection of the work created.

Elm Workspace has recently completed the office furniture fit-out for Clarks International. Based in Street, Somerset, Clarks commissioned Elm Workspace to provide a variety of office furniture alongside their expertise in office space planning and office design.

The furniture install was the first for Clarks to implement in their newly re-furbished building at their Somerset headquarters. A combination of office task chairs, workstations, soft seating and storage has enhanced the contemporary feel that already existed with the exposed brick walls in the period building.

Elm’s Managing Director, Daren Spencer worked alongside Clark’s Group FM & Projects Manager, Jayne Lomax to create the new space with contemporary office furniture.

‘We are delighted with the final outcome. Through a series of meetings with Daren and Elm’s design team we have been able to create a modern office which contains a variety of products, that not only suit the image of the company but the requirements of the working environment.’ Said Jayne.

The new office is home to senior staff at Clarks, and includes open and private office space, with soft seating and a large meeting room.

It is a positive start to 2013 for Elm as they continue to work with some major clients within the South West. ‘We are delighted with the final outcome for Clarks. The new office looks superb and it shows how well our design and space-planning team have done. We are looking forward to working with Clarks in the near-future, as they continue with their office refurbishment.’ Commented Daren Spencer.

From time-to-time the furniture needs of some organisations cannot be satisfied by the existing furniture available on the market. This was certainly the case with London South Bank University (LSBU), one of the UK’s largest Universities.

LSBU faced a number of flexibility problems in different classrooms and learning settings. By collaborating with Elm Furniture and Gresham they developed a very flexible classroom desk, affectionately known as – The Telford Segment, which more than solved these problems with a very innovative approach.

Lynda Bradish, Head of Facilities at London South Bank University (LSBU), came to Elm Workspace with her initial problem, ‘The classrooms are set-up in a traditional teaching layout with the furniture set in rows facing to the front. The feedback from the Lecturers was that they found the existing furniture to be too cumbersome and inflexible to enable different layouts to be arranged to suit different styles of teaching and learning.

Working with Lynda’s classroom experience and knowledge within the field and Elm’s suppliers, Managing Director, Daren Spencer was able to begin the design and manufacturing process, ‘I spoke to Elm and asked them what furniture was available on the market that could deliver the flexible working options that the lecturers required? It needed to be aesthetically pleasing, operationally robust and at an affordable price. Working with Elm we developed the table to what it is today and last year we set up four pilot classrooms to trial the new tables which have been well received by the lecturers who have provided very positive feedback.’ Commented Lynda.

The Telford Segment product that was designed and built in partnership with Gresham, offered several key factors that ultimately improved the classroom experience, which Lynda felt suitable to pursue, ‘Having flexibility to rearrange room furniture layouts easily and quickly without fuss enhances the teaching and learning experience. It’s a process of continuous change, the needs of the business changes and evolves, what we need from our suppliers is someone that can support us with those evolving changes.’

As with all office furniture design and development the build process and client communication was a challenging process, but not one that phased the confidence of Daren, ‘When Lynda first approached Elm, we knew that we had to utilize not only our design skills and experience but also our manufacturing expertise. The product has proved a huge success and we are delighted that we have met those needs within the learning environment’.

Elm Workspace provides a number of products and services covering office furniture, refurbishment, design and space planning.

Overall, Elm Workspace have continued to provide a service that prioritizes the direct needs of the client and a service that leaves a lasting positive impression, ‘Elm have always been really helpful and do their best to understand what we are trying to achieve and work with us to enable us to get there. I’m very pleased with the end product.’ Concluded Lynda.

Elm updated a period building accommodating the school’s Principal ship, teaching and office staff as well as providing new furniture and storage for Springfield’s 500 plus students.

The Springfield Academy is unique in that it supports boys that have had a difficult upbringing in challenging circumstances. The school has an ethos of working with local business and following research they contacted Elm Workspace.

Springfield’s Principal, Trystan Williams is delighted with the final result from Elm. ‘We were advised by Elm to take a look at other academies, and the whole process started from there. There was open conversation and open dialogue, with plenty of recommendations and ideas. Looking back I enjoyed the whole experience of the build and furniture fit-out.’ Said Mr Williams.

In the future Mr Williams looks forward to growing the school and with the addition of new office and educational furniture the learning environment is enhanced.

Elm is proud to have produced such a positive environment and look forward to working with the school in 2013 to help them achieve their new learning environment.
