You have to decorate your office for Christmas, you have no choice. Promoting a positive work culture is great for your employees and it looks good in the eyes of your customers.  Here’s what you can do to get your office into the Christmas spirit:

Get a Christmas Tree

This seems the most obvious but it’s the decoration that many people get wrong.  When buying your Christmas tree, it’s understandable you don’t want to buy an expensive tree. The tree will only be there for about a month. One small desk tree doesn’t shout out ‘Christmas is here’ and it says you don’t really care.

Buy a tall tree. It doesn’t have to be a real tree, if you can get one that is made of plastic and can be dismantled, it can be reused every year.

Pick a colour theme

It’s important to select a colour theme otherwise your decorations can look messy. You want to show you’ve made an effort and make people envious when you share pictures on Pinterest and Instagram.

Choose colours that work well together (gold & red, blue & silver, green & purple, etc)  then choose baubles, tinsel, ornaments and other decorations following this colour scheme.

Christmas Jumper Day

We understand that this is about decorating your office but don’t forget that your employees can create a festive vibe by wearing a Christmas jumper. Wearing Christmas jumpers to work is becoming an even more popular trend every year.  It’s also a great excuse to take a team picture and share it on your social media accounts.

Encourage your employees to decorate their own desks

With this one you can encourage everyone to get into the holiday spirit by letting people know they can decorate their desks (or cubicles) with festive decorations.  This can help you save money buying more decorations as your employees will decorate their own areas and these team based activities can be very beneficial to boosting morale at work.

Hunt down the scrooges in your office and get them to spruce up their desk in the name of Christmas!

• To encourage people to decorate, create a competition: The best decorated Christmas desk wins a prize.
• Set aside a small budget to buy-in a collection of decorations that employees can use to decorate their areas.

Get festive foods for the office 

Apart from the presents, food is a major part of Christmas! Biscuits, mince pies, Christmas puddings, candy, cakes, fudge, there’s so many different festive treats to get everyone in the mood. 

As a treat, bring in a few cakes and sweets on the Fridays in December or on the final week leading up to Christmas. Just like hanging out by the water cooler, you can have some of your best discussions at the Christmas treat table.

• As a fun activity, organise a competition for who makes the best Christmas pudding or treat. 

Christmas Music

Don’t start the festive music too early. Supermarkets and shops always start their Christmas music  early in a bid to encourage people to think about Christmas and buy some gifts for their loved ones.  If you start playing Jingle Bells and Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer in November, you could end up with a mutiny on your hands.

Unleash the tunes in the last couple of weeks before Christmas as this is when most of your employees will be feeling Christmassy and will enjoy the same cheesy tunes…
